There is nothing like a Dem !

Proving that no creature, not even the armadillo, is as clueless as a democrat, this week Reid and Obama both stated that "we can't drill our way out of an oil shortage". Think about that for a moment, truly a statement of profound stupidity. Of course you can drill you way out of a shortage! Drilling for more oil is required to increase the supply, increasing the supply by definition decreases the shortage. It's like saying "you can't eat your way out of being hungry".  These are the people we have elected to run the government! Pelosi, another rocket scientist, opined that since 68 million acres of leases are not being drilled now, there is no point allowing exploration in other areas. She is (suprise) ignorant of the fact that leased areas are not being drilled because it was determined that there was not enough oil there or the cost to extract it was too high. No, she insists the oil companies must look for oil in all the places where oil is not before she will let them look for it where it is. When it comes to clueless, there is nothing like a dem! (with apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein!)

Or perhaps nothing like a NeoCon...I think Pelosi's point was that if you are hungry because food supplies are running low, opening up the storehouse and binging on what's left of your reserves may make you feel better in the short term, but is not a good *long-term* strategy.

Oil is precious and limited. We need it not just for fueling SUVs, but for fertilizer, plastics, lubricants, critical industrial processes, and of course national-defense. It seems imprudent national policy to burn through our reserves (in ANWR, off-shore, etc.) to fuel SUVs and McMansions in the absence of a sane sustainable energy program.

For the last 40 years, the French have quietly built an independent sustainable domestic energy supply from nuclear and hydro power and are now net exporters of energy. In the US, unhealthy oil industry "participation" in government and zealous NeoCon opposition to any government regulation (or planning) may have placed our economy and security at risk.

This problem illustrates where free-markets (and NeoCons) fail: problems that require long-term planning and investment with no short-term ROI. Competition for capital draws investment away from such problems towards those with nearer-term solutions (and ROI). Food, Energy, and National Defense are areas the government must plan, invest, and regulate since failure to do so can have sudden and catastrophic impacts...often with no quick market fixes suitable for a democratic nation that cares about its citizens.

Dogma and politics are a dangerous combination...there is no one solution to all problems (neither neocon dogmatic free-marketeering or communist dogmatic planned economies) different problems require different approaches and the trick is to understand what tool solves each problem.

In this case, Pelosi appears to be correct...solving our energy problems requires more than just drilling...it needs a broader and longer-term plan (albeit one that might involve drilling).

Yes, oil is precious and limited, but leaving it the ground, undeveloped, helps no one. It takes years to put a field into production, waiting until we are in a crisis is foolish, and then it's too late to do anything.

Free markets do not fail at long term planning, our energy and food problems are not the result of market problems but of gov't stupidity. Pelosi demanded a huge increase in ethanol, and now food prices are out of sight. That is her fault, and people around the world will die from her stupidity.

The roadblocks to a sane energy policy are the DNC and their enviro kook allies. They block hydro plants. They killed the nuke industry, are killing coal and oil, and only offer us non-workable solutions like solar and wind. I have yet to see the passenger jet that runs on wind or solar power

Anytime a sentence begins with "Pelosi is correct" you should stop and think. Yes, a broken clock is correct twice a day, but she is nowhere near as useful as a broken clock. She insists we not drill for more oil. She opposes nuclear power. She opposes coal. If she had her way, we would all be sitting in the dark starving. She is a complete moron and not fit for any elected office, or any position other than janitor.

The only gov't work required to solve the problem is to get out of the way. Stop blocking power plant construction, stop blocking shale development and oil drilling, and for God's sake stop this global warming BS.
